Annapurna Circuit Trek Altitude Profile:
Although the Annapurna Circuit Trek path is fairly gradual, the trail’s elevation ranges from 4,500 to 7,816 feet.
The Annapurna Circuit trek starts in a typical fashion with an ascent from 760m all the way up to the 5416m Thorong La Pass before a decent back down to Pokhara around 800m. One of the reasons for the diversity of the landscape and the importance of acclimatization is this wide altitude range.
At altitudes above 3,000 m, it is necessary to allow the body to adjust to the reduced levels of oxygen. Headache, nausea, fatigue and dizziness can be symptoms of AMS. Each trekker’s response to altitude varies and no training is foolproof, and the route is carefully planned to rise gently.
The first stage of the ascent is quite steep. The first ascent is quite steep.
- 1,860m and above: Alpine zone, cold and wet, barren fields
- 3,519m–3,839m: Alpine transition to alpine, pine and oak forest
- 3,519m–4,450m: High alpine, little vegetation, cold nights
- 4450m–5416m: Arctic conditions; snow and ice conditions may occur throughout the year.
- The steep drop to the rain shadow valley of the Kali Gandaki from 5416m to 1190m is rapid.
