Overview
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a spiritual journey, a trekking journey to the holy mountain Kailash, which is one of the most sacred mountain peaks on the earth, circumambulating the mountain in a clockwise direction. It’s a journey of unforgettable experiences of high altitudes, raw wilderness of the Himalayas, and deep religious experience all rolled into one. A yatra that makes you walk as a devotee or an adventurer, definitely alters your life for good.
What is Special about this Yatra?
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a hike that is quite different from any other trek on the earth. At this point there are no summits to climb and no medals to win. What you bring back is completely invisible, it’s a calm, it’s a clarity, it’s a quiet feeling that there is something bigger than you. Nobody invites you to climb the mountain. It exhorts you to stroll around it, to give up to it.
The kailash kora (the 52 km tour around the Mount Kailash) is the core of this tour. This is a path that has been taken by pilgrims from all the four religions, namely Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon, for thousands of years. You see and feel that weight of that history in your feet as you get on the line that moves slowly through stone and wind.
Why Pilgrims and Trekkers Both Come Here?
- The belief of the Hindus is that going around Mount Kailash purges them of their sins for the entire life.
- In Buddhist belief, it is the residence of Demchok, a god of Ultimate Bliss.
- Jains consider it to be the place where their first tirthankara achieved Nirvana.
- Tibet’s native religion, the Bon religion, consider Kailash as the source of all spiritual energy.
- Trekkers come for the landscape, and stay for the transformation
Religious beliefs of Mount Kailash, Mansarovar.
In Hindu mythology, Mount Kailash is thought to be the place where Lord Shiva resides. In ancient literature it is called the axis mundi, the center of the universe, the point where heaven and earth meet. No one has ever climbed it. No mountaineering expeditions have been allowed at any time. The untouched mountain has a great meaning.
The lake is at 4590m opposite the mountain and is one of the holiest lakes in Asia. The Hindus believe that taking bath in its water purifies the mind. Buddhists believe that it was made in the mind of Brahma before it came to earth. A calm morning will show a perfect reflection of the mountain in the lake, a feat that seems beyond belief.
- Stops along the way that are considered sacred.
- Yam Dwar: The gate of death and entry point of the Kailash kora.
- Diraphuk Monastery: Closest monastery to the north face of Kailash.
- Dolma La Pass (5636m): The most elevated and spiritual place on the kora.
- Gauri Kund: A glacial lake sacred to Goddess Parvati
- Ashtapad: A sacred place of the Jains, near the southern face.
Puja and Offerings on Kailash Tour Yatra
Ritual is integral to the journey on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It is the journey. Lake Mansarovar offers prayers, flowers and rice at dawn and the water turns golden. The cold is sharp. It is quite silent. The giving of something, just your attention, seems like the most natural thing in the world.
The butter lamps are lit continuously at Diraphuk and Zuthulphuk monasteries. The monks chant quietly and in a resonant voice. Prayer flags are tied to the mountain passes, waving prayers through the air. It’s not a religious thing to feel what is happening here. Devotion here is so focused that you could almost believe that it’s an atmosphere.
Touring Kailash Mansarovar: How to?
It is not a whirl around the Kailash Mansarovar yatra is a weekend excursion. It will take about 10 days to go through the border crossing in Kerung (Gyirong) in Nepal and into Tibet. The walk goes through Kathmandu, then up through high Himalayan terrain and then gradually acclimatises you before the kora.
The journey to Dolma La Pass at height of 5636m is the toughest part. This is a place where most people walk slowly. Some stop. Some cry. The altitude takes what it gives, but nearly all those who have reached the pass say they will do it all over again if they could.
Which is the nature of Kailash Mansarovar?
The Tibetan plateau around Mount Kailash is one of the most pristine and remote, on earth. Wide open skies. Plain surfaces winded by abrupt and steep crests. Prayer flags fluttering in the wind. The setting is the most stripped down imaginable, and as such is overwhelming.
Not a resort area. It’s not a curated experience. It is raw, high, cold and very real. The air is thin. The light is so bright that it’s hurting my eyes. At night, with no light pollutions for hundreds of kilometres, the stars are unrivalled in quality even when compared to those in a city or even a lower altitude trek.
Landscape and Environment at a Glance
Average elevation: 4,900m to 5,636m along the way
Climate: Cold to cold and moist to cold
Climate: Dry and cold; best visited May to September
Wildlife: Tibetan wild ass (kiang), Himalayan wolf, bar-headed geese on Mansarovar
Vegetation: Poorly developed high altitude shrubs, moss, little above 5,000m
What Kind of Food Is available On the Kailash Yatra?
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra food is straightforward, warm, and heartfelt. Along the trail you’ll find Tibetan guesthouses and teahouses where food is what keeps you going at high altitude, not impressing you. Here the staples of the local diet are the roasted barley flour (tsampa), noodle soup (thukpa), dumplings (momos) and butter tea.
Most visitors at altitude will not find butter tea to be an acquired taste, but it is indeed warming at altitude and dense in calories, which, above 4500m, are what your body requires. At lower altitudes, along the Nepal side, there is a place where Dal bhat (rice and lentils) can be found. Depending on the location, vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are available.
What accommodations can be made?
On the Kailash Mansarovar yatra, the accommodations are basic but functional, in the style of a guest house. In Tibet, one will live in Tibetan guesthouses, which provide shared rooms, and a very basic level of facilities, with limited amenities. Heating is minimal. Thermos flasks are typically the only receptacles for hot water. Toilets can be shared and traditional. This is a part of the way.
Accommodation in Kathmandu is comfortable and modern at the beginning and end of the journey, where you can get time to prepare and recover from the trip. Small roadside facilities offer basic food and rest stops along the Nepal road to the town of Kerung. For most people, the “rawness” of the lodging in Tibet is not a bad thing, it’s a reminder that you’re in Tibet.
Kailash Tour Visa and Permit Update 2026
Tibet is a restricted region and for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra tour, you will need a special permits set, in addition to a Chinese visa. In 2026, foreigners will require the Tibet Travel Permit, Aliens’ Travel Permit, and Military Area Entry Permit to enter the Kailash region. These are available only through a Tibetan travel agency, and cannot be purchased independently.
Indian nationals are now crossing via Lipulekh Pass route (as part of the Government of India program) or through Nepal via the crossing at Kerung. The land border between Tibet and Nepal is Kerung-Gyirong, which is open for Nepali and international visitors. Permit laws are updated regularly and the current regulations in Tibet in 2026 further prohibit independent touring for foreigners, leaving only group tours with guide available.
What Is Kailash Mansarovar Famous For?
Mount Kailash is known as the holiest peak in the world for four major religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon. Never climbed. It is located at the confluence of four major rivers in Asia, the Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej and Karnali. It is symmetrical, and even more so than an architecture. By comparison, it’s quite remarkable.
A lake is located next to it, which is one of the highest freshwater lake on the earth and one of the most spiritually revered. The mountain and the lake together create a place that is imagined in all religions that have met it. It is believed that this circuit around Kailash is the most potent circuit in the world.
Why You Should Visit | A Word From Those Who Have
Individuals who have performed Kailash Mansarovar yatra seldom ever give the same description to it on second time. A few mention the silence. Some discuss the altitude doing some unexpected things to them. Some speak about the strangers who assisted them on the pass. Others state that they noticed a change in themselves.
Not a religious person is needed to be moved here. The mountain does not call you to believe. It requires only your presence, your willingness to go through distress, and your respect for an old thing that doesn’t change. That is enough.
